The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Chandra Majhi, reached out via phone to the father of a medical student who was reportedly a victim of gang rape in Durgapur, West Bengal, assuring him of the state government's full support.
The incident involving the medical student occurred on Friday night outside a private medical college in the Purba Bardhaman district, where the second-year student had gone out for a meal with a friend.
In response to the case, West Bengal police arrested three suspects on Sunday.
Majhi spoke with the victim's father on Saturday night, expressing his deep sorrow regarding the situation. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, he said, 'I can understand the mental state of a father whose daughter has been subjected to such a horrific crime. The state government stands firmly with you during this challenging time.'
He emphasized that the government is focused on ensuring the victim's swift recovery and her return to a normal life.
Majhi also mentioned that he has urged West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to ensure that the perpetrators receive the harshest penalties.
A senior official from Odisha is in contact with the West Bengal government to provide all necessary legal assistance. Additionally, he has instructed the Superintendent of Police in Balasore to coordinate with the Durgapur police and offer any required support.
Majhi reassured the victim's father of all possible assistance, to which the father expressed gratitude for the sympathy and support from the Chief Minister.
Earlier on Saturday, Majhi had taken to social media to call for the swift arrest of the accused and to ensure they face severe punishment.
